No, I wasn't in Antarctica. Would you believe Montauk, New York?

A couple of weeks back I spent a Day in the Field with Charles Glatzer hiking up and down Montauk Point looking for seals. It was 18º with 25mph winds, resulting in a -4º wind chill. The ocean was frozen from the shoreline out about 50 or more feet, and beyond that was the ice filled slush you see in this photograph. I was lugging around my new Nikon 500mm lens, used here for the first time. This image is the only real keeper of the bunch, as we sighted only a few seals in our 2 plus mile hike. Now that the pain in my legs has finally subsided, and I can feel my nose again, I can say it was a great experience that I will not soon forget.

Nikon D2h, Nikon 500mm f/4 w/1.4xt, 1/640 sec, f/9, ISO 200

Very well done, Brett -- the ice makes an interesting background, the seal is well placed in the frame, and the light is very nice. Hard to believe that's taken off the coast of Long Island.

Amen to Matt's comments. Nice composition and love the way the seal looks like it's checking you out.

Brett, I am still shivering- lol

Love the image!

IMO, the midtones are a bit dark as presented.

Best and see you again, and again, and ...

This makes me 2 for 2 today posting images that were too dark. That's what I get for processing them in the morning with all the early day light streaming into my studio. I've adjusted this one a bit lighter. Did I go far enough?

Thanks for pointing it out.

Brett, I really like how you included this seal in the icy habitat to give a feel for what they can tolerate. Definitely worth getting chilled!
