Hi,

I will spend a few days in the Mono Lake / Mammoth region, possibly extending as far south as Bishop. What are the key photo opportunities that I shouldn't miss?

I'm aware of and have previously been to Mono Lake, Bode and of course Yosemite. What other key sites would you recommend in this general region?

Thanks for your help!

I can't help much, I've been to the area once and if I could go again for a few days I would probably spend all my time at Mono Lake. I am fascinated with the place!

If your going to Bishop, you may want to head south on 395 for another 45 minutes and check out Lonepine/Mt. Whitney. A very small town. But lots to see.

When are you going? If you are going to be there mid-October, The June Lake loop and the Bishop Creek areas are great for fall color. The Ancient Bristleconr Pine forests in the White Mountains (accessed through Big Pine - about 10 miles south of Bishop) have a lot of photographic opportunity if you get there before the snows close the roads.

The area around Devil's Postpile Nat'l. Monument (past Mammoth Mountain Lodge) is very photogenic. I especially like the short hike to Rainbow Falls (out of Red's Meadows)

Enoy your trip.

Mono Lake is fascinating. But now that water district is slowly restoring the lake close to its former level, most of the tufa areas will be covered in a few years. I'm not sure of the timeline but I think it is something like ten years.

I will certainly be making at least on trip a year to try to improve on my shots of the area.

Thanks for your advice!

I will be there in mid September, so I'm afraid I'll miss the fall colors (but will hopefully have warm weather...).
