I shot this northern shoveler hen yesterday afternoon as she was displaying these colors. I suspect it to be a submissive display meant for the other shovelers with whom she and her drake shares my creek. This pair is low on the pecking order among the four to seven pairs I see regularly. I have seen the drakes do it when having a dispute among themselves, but this is the first hen I have seen do it. All the shovelers have the ability to show the light blue feathers in this prominent display when they wish. Her display makes a really outrageous color addition to a normally not too colorful duck. I will try and get a nice shot of a drake exhibiting this display.
