See http://www.dpreview.com for the new Nikon digital camera, which I assume is their version of the 300D.

I wouldn't call it that. Yes, it's in the same price range as the 300D but it isn't crippled like the 300D is. Against the D100 specs there are very few things that the D70 does worse. In fact, there are a bunch of areas which the D70 is better.

I love how 6.01 Megapixels from the spec sheet becomes 6.1 Megapixels in the text!

I like the way it has a 1/500th flash sync and can use i-TTL on my new flash. I think the D100 will be sold off as soon as I get back from Alaska.

The metering on the D100:
Metering • 3D Matrix Metering with 10-segment SPD
• Center-Weighted Average
• Spot
The metering on the D2H:
Metering TTL full-aperture exposure metering system;
• D-/G-type Nikkor lenses support 3D Color Matrix Metering using the 1,005-pixel CCD while other AF Nikkor lenses with built-in CPUs support Matrix Metering (Non-CPU lenses require manual input of lens data)
• Center-Weighted Metering (75% of the meter's sensitivity concentrated on the 8mm dia. circle)
• Spot Metering (3mm dia. circle, approx. 2% of entire frame); metering position can be linked to the focus area when using Nikkor lenses with built-in CPU
The metering on the D70:
Metering TTL full-aperture exposure metering system
• 3D color matrix metering with 1,005-pixel RGB sensor
• Center-weighted: Weight of 75%(8mm circle) given to 6, 8, 10, or 13-mm circle in center of frame, or weighting based on average of entire frame
• Spot: Meters 2.3mm circle (about 1% of frame) centered on active focus area
It looks to me like a step up from the D100 metering. The system seems to be the same as the D2H although the phrasing seems to be different. It still has 3 modes: Matrix, Center and Spot.

Looks like Nikon isn't dead after all... Very impressive. Let's just hope it's as noise free as the Canon 10D.

It seems to be a very capable camara!
Just waiting for the results, then start thinking of getting one myself!

I don't have experience with DSLRs but isn't it minimum ISO 200 an handicap? Or do you expect to have at ISO 200 the same quality as in ,say 300D @ ISO 100?...

All of my dSLRs to date have had a minimum ISO of 200. I only consider this a handicap if there is a lot of light and I need a slow shutter speed. Since this is the lowest ISO for the camera, I believe the manufacturer is stating that it is the sweet spot for the sensor. (Best signal to noise ratio.)

OK, either way, it's where I would compare image quality. Best against best. Usually, this isn't a deciding factor for the camera since the images tend to be quite close in quality.
