What E.J. said..............

I'd love to know who the idiot at Nikon is who made the decision to move from a 20.8 MP sensor in the D5 to a...........wait for it!!.............. 20.8 MP sensor in the D6.  Talk about stupid.............this camera is a huge disappointment.

Also disappointing because It seems like this also means that Nikon has no plans in the near future (or future at all) for a mirrorless camera that can compete with the Sony A9 in terms of frame rate and autofocus capability.

I think Nikon has made more than one mirrorless cameras so far and some of them and their lenses are still for sales.

Don't get why they did this seems a waste, I'm sure it will sell but not like past top shelf cameras they've had.
I'll wait for the D850 mirrorless which could be called the Z8.

I think what we are seeing is a divergence between sports photography and wildlife photography.

The similarities have always been frame rate and low noise high iso. However, sports photography requires a quickly delivered product that doesn't even need the 20mp the camera has. Where as wildlife photography never delivers quickly and prefers higher mp to augment effective magnification.

The D6, like the D4 and D5, is made for sports photographers first and foremost. And though there are wildlife photographers that have fit the D4, D5 and now D6 into their arsenal of tools, there are fewer and fewer of them that are willing to pay for the cost of the camera with the level of compromise that most end up dealing with. After all, I think most wildlife photographers wouldn't complain nearly as much about these cameras if they cost between $2k and $3k rather than $6.5k. Then it would simply be a lower mp, higher frame rate camera that can shoot on a single battery for days.

^^^ Although I'm a fan of mirrorless, I'd pay $6.5k for a D6s if it came with a 36MP sensor. Of course that's never going to happen. Anyway, I'm more convinced than ever that my D850 is the last DSLR I will ever own.
