Last night the solar flare created an awesome display that was probably better before the sunset in our area. There is a meteor near the horizon as well, just above the receding clouds. This was taken 7:49 PM EDT. Soon after this the display faded a bit into diffuse areas of red and light green. There were never any sheet structures after this. It was truly awesome.
EOS 1Ds, 24-70mm f/2.8L at 24mm, f/2.8 ISO 800, 30 seconds. In PS, levels and a touch of USM.

I think this is beautiful. I don't think I've seen the red lights before. This must be amazing to see in person! Thanks for sharing it.

Wil,

Yes a very nice image. Red Auroras are more rare and make for an exciting image. The meteor is a big plus in this image. Congrats.

Well I'm glad someone is seeing these. I've been socked with clouds for the past few days and the next few also. Figures the biggest geomagnetic storm and I have clouds!! Sorry.

Nice shot.

Very nice capture. It's been overcast here for the past few evenings, so the auroras have just been a rumor.

We seldom if ever get auroras in Los Angeles. The smoke has obscured the skies for a few days so even it they occurred with that massive solar flare, they were invisible to us.
I can only look at this with longing and hope to see some in person. this is very nice and inspiring. Hopefully next time

Hi Wil,

Thanks for posting. I am too far from the south pole to see the real thing

Lovely capture. I never tire of seeing shots of the borealis.
On this occasion, for me as well, clouds keep the show behind the curtain.

Lovely shot.

You've captured some nice streamers here, even with the 30 sec exposure. I like the extra drama that is added by the moving clouds.

I want to add that also here a purplish colour is visible above/left of the green. I see this in a lot of shots. Anyone able to tell me if this is real? My eyes have not seen this. My best guess would be that it is real.
