Title: BLACK-CHESTED SNAKE-EAGLE
Species: Black-chested Snake-Eagle (Circaetus pectoralis)
Photographer: James McIntyre
Location: Serengeti Plain, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania
Date: January, 2003
Equipment: Canon EOS-3; EF 100-400 mm f/4-5.6L IS USM + 1.4x I TE, handheld
Mode: Aperture Priority
Evaluative Metering: +1/3
Film: Fuji Provia 100F
Scanner: Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED with LaserSoft SilverFast Ai Software v6.0.1r28 (IT8 calibrated)

There are five different species of Snake-eagle in East Africa. They are medium-sized eagles with large, rounded heads, striking yellow eyes and bare legs. They perch in an upright stance. All feed on snakes and other reptiles. The Black-chested is sometimes listed as a race of the Short-toed Snake-eagle (Circaetus gallicus).

As our group observed and photographed a birthing herd of Wildebeest and Zebra on the Serengeti Plain, this beautiful adult eagle soared overhead to survey the scene.

Beautiful bird James. Looks like a tough lighting situation, but you handeled it well. It's a tad bit soft, but I'd take it.

Cool bird. Excellent underwing detail.

Beautiful shot James.

It is one of my goals to get a picture of a passing african eagle, preferably a Bateleur. I have so far come up way short on that one. If I get one half this good I'd be happy. Congrats

Thanks Dave. Bateleurs, Tawnies, Wahlbergs, more Snake-eagles and Vultures to follow.

As AM notes, the head is a little soft on this one, but I think I pushed the sharpening as far as I dared. The AF may have homed on the wings. This was literally a grab-and-shoot shot. Moments later this bird was high in the sky.
