This was a cooperative Northern Shoveler that was at a local lake for a couple of days this fall.....hiding among the mallards. I would like to rework this one but the RAW image was inadvertently deleted along with with most of the local images that I shot this fall when my HD was full and ready to crash. I did save the TIFF file that I had originally worked on so this is perhaps "overworked". However, I played with the new PS/CS shadow and recovery tool which I think is going to be a wonderful tool....when I can figure it all out.

Canon 1D, 500mmL IS, 2X TC, 550EX, tripod
Original data lost but probably f/11 and fill flash
PS - some cropping, USM, levels, shadow/recovery tool

Wow what an awesome shot! The eye is striking and really draws the viewer in. I like the angle of the lighting as well. Very nice... sorry to hear about your HD problems!

Data lost??? Surely you are archiving your RAW files. If not, I would suggest you start to otherwise you have no original!

The photo is great, Shovelers can be so difficult.

Lana,

This is great. You captured some wonderful detail in the wing and a nice view of the eye. I also like the water color. Excellent work.

Sweet one -- as soon as I saw I could hear in my mind the shoveler saying 'I once caught a fish this big'

Can't believe I missed this earlier today. It's wonderful. Great color, and I really like the detail of the left primaries (right side of image) close to the bill.

One of my two Maxtor internal drives is limping the last two weeks (official Dell warning on startup) and will be replaced over the weekend. It and its partner replaced the crashed original drive from Dell (also a Maxtor, I believe) just 13 months ago. The guy who's doing the work for me says transferring large files is the most stress you can put on a drive (that is what I was doing, of course, when I found the bad file--moving files off the nearly full internal drive onto an external one). In addition to the internal drive failures, I've had one bad Maxtor external unit (out of two). So I'd put very little faith in hard drives. I'm looking at a DVD burner, as CDs are impossible with 120 MB files.
