These are one of my all time favourite ducks. They have such presence and wonderful expressions on their cheeky little faces.

One day I will get a shot that really does them justice! but here is a starter.

All comments and critiques always welcome and appreciated and thanks for looking.

RCP's are gorgeous when they are at peak plumage like this one. Two main things to "do them justice" would be to get as low as humanly possible so that you aren't shooting down on the bird so much and to take a photo when his head is turned a bit toward you so that that gorgeous red head doesn't have that darker patch from the eye to the bill like it does in this photo. On the other hand this angle shows his feet under the water well.

Lovely shot, Carol. These are my favorite ducks. Most of the ones I see have a bit more saturated coloration. I second EJ's comments.

Beautiful! I like the color and the dark water. I really like the foot underwater. A bit lower angle would give this a more intimate perspective.

Carol,

Very nice. Pochards sure have some wonderful colors. As you have heard, a lower angle would be better, but then you might lose the view of the foot which is an important part of this photograph.

Having the duck at a diagonal like this helps the composition when a high shooting angle is used. I love being able to see the foot under water. :)

For a "starter" shot it is a might nice image. Seeing the foot is nice.

He is beautiful with wonderful detail. I know....you've heard it before from the others but a lower angle would have been nice. I also know that you have to shoot them when and how you can. With that.....you got his foot and actually have a nice view. I saw them in Phoenix but didn't get one keeper of any so I sure appreciate this one you have.

Thanks everyone for your comments and advice, much appreciated. :)

I only wish I could have got lower, but at this particular lake the sides are pretty steep and this was taken from a wooden deck which is the only place to take sensible images without falling in!!
