Common Teal (Anas crecca)– Essex, UK.
Image

Canon EOS 1Ds MkII, 600/f4 IS + EF 2x extender, wimberley head.
Manual exposure mode f11, 1/400s, iso 640, AWB.
RAW image processed in Capture One; sharpened in Photoshop CS2; full frame.

I spent a couple of hours watching a small flock of teal gleaning seeds off the mud on Sunday. They would collect a mouthful of mud and vegetation and then trot to the water’s-edge to wash away the dirt, presumably retaining the good stuff. Once they started to feed, they paid no attention whatsoever to the movements of the lens.

I’ve never been able to get very close to these wary, wild birds before.

Really outstanding light and pose on this image!! I have seen this species only once here locally hanging out with some Green-winged Teal which are nearly identical.

Lovely image!  Great colors and pose. I would tone down the white a bit.

This rocks Phil. The reflection, the feeding, the extreme low angle. Beautiful.

Gorgeous capture Phil! :) The background dividing the canvas in two is the only thing that I would have preferred to be different.
