The Brown Violet-ear Hummingbirds were very cooperative at La Paz Waterfall Garden in Costa Rica. This is a more traditional mottled-green background with the red flower to give an extra punch.

They have hundreds of hummingbird feeders and two gazebos where we can shoot even if is pouring outside (as frequently did).

They have a show were the visitors are handed small hummingbird feeders to hold on their hands then all of the regular feeders are covered with clothes, so what the poor hungry hummingbirds need to do? , just approach the tiny feeders held by the costumers and you can bring them close to your nose.

Fortunately the "show" only last few minutes, after that all the regular feeders are uncovered and the birds scatter all over the place.

The visitors get a kick about the proximity of the birds, you can really observe closely their beauty and everything looks very benign to me.

All brutal comments are appreciated, thanks for looking.

Juan,

This is very good. I think the background was exposed much better on this one. Getting the Violet in these guys is tough sometimes, especially on the gorget. I really like this shot.

Dan said it for sure - you are the master of hummingbird photography Juan. Another great image and I like the more natural looking background on this one.

This is wonderful Juan. Now you did ask for brutal so....I think the flower, especially the stem, is too flashed looking. By the way can you do these hummers with those small soft box attachments over your strobes? Have you ever tried that? Kinda of would like to know for my own work. I'd like a slightly more subdued green for the backround. Compositionally its OK but not killer. The bird looks slightly too flashed too, but not real bad. I guess I really favor the natural light if you can get it. The detail is what this picture is about and its awesome. And man-- what a beautiful specimen!

The colors of the "ears" and gorget are hard to get I would imagine. Beautiful!

Juan, this has to be one of your better hummer images IMHO. I find the BG looks real and the flower does not look over-flashed to me. Birds pose is tremendous and the detail present is amazing. Killer shot.
