Green-winged Teal, Bombay Hook NWR, Smyrna, DE

Canon 1DMkII, 500 f/4 IS, 1/400 @ f/11, ISO 200, manual exposure
Chris Kayler and I were photographing these guys at Bombay this past weekend and we couldn't believe how close they got to us. When we first went down to the area where they hang out to get set up in our blinds, they swam away a little but then came right back. It was killing us because we had to wait about 30 minutes for the sun to come up and here they were swimming around right in front of us. As the morning went on they got even more trusting of us and were so close that Chris was actually taking macro shots of them. And he wasn't even in his blind anymore! I guess someone forgot to tell them that they're the ducks that take off as soon as you stop your car to photograph them! Unfortunately the males are not quite in full breeding plumage yet but should be soon.
Comments appreciated!

Love this shot Kim! What an awesome experience this was. I should have focused more on full body shots - i only got a few, and they are of females only. I've got a few you havent seen yet.. wait till tommorow :D

Beautiful...I like your composition and the "over the shoulder" look, something different.

Very nice as is and I particularly like the pose plus the wavy reflection bg, Kim!
I was thinking of a tight horizontal crop too ...

Wow - Nicely done Kim. Great DOF, the entire Teal is Sharp and Beautifully exposed. The electric blue rippled BG is stunning.

Really a great image of this behavior. Sharp as heck and the rippled colors are great in the water.

This is killing me. I've never been able to get anywhere within a quarter mile of these guys....and here you have them practically sitting in your lap. Beautiful image....with gorgeous colors and such a smooth appearance.

What incredible detail - well done! Isn't it great to have any bird trust you like that.

No kidding on getting close! Excellent capture, the bird looks totally relaxed which I've never seen in a teal.

A pure work of art kim, dripping in feeling. From the beak chaging in color to breeding, to those delicate, soft, tender underlying feathers that shes so meticulously preening so as to keep her warm and dry. Square format is unusual and mimics her posture with its framing. So thats ok by me. Detail in the outer feathers is awesome, and I'm glad you got those wing bar colors in there. Perfect head angle and eye contact. I think I get an unstable feel to the overall composition probably because of the centering of subject in a square format, that I am trying to figure out might be better some other way, but nothing has hit me. Maybe thats why some folks were thinking going horizontal.Congrats my photo friend!
