Wood Duck. Aix sponsa. Male breeding plumage.

Santee, California. Oct. 1, 2005. 5pm.

Mark 2, 500f4, ISO 250, manual metering, f5.6 @ 1/2000th, hand held.

I have been working on these guys in flight for quite some time and have been plagued by junky backgrounds and excessive distance. I know the tail is all dark and that bugs me, but I was happy to get good light on the face.

not easy to get these for sure. You'll definitly have to shoot these guys on a less contrasty lit day and personally I like something--anything in the bacround to give a relative feel.

Excellent action and the detail is great. I see a very faint halo around the bird which you might be able to eliminate.

Great underwing detail Steve! The lighting is a bit harsh, but I'd take a sharp flight shot of this duck anytime.

Great capture. The lighting works for me; it's amazing how nicely you captured the bird--sharp, well-exposed, nicely framed.

Impressive particularly the wing detail, Steve!
Some halo seen around the bird probably due to S/H tool action ...

Great flight shot with fantastic Head/Wing detail and color Steve. You've already mentioned my only nit.

Congrats.

Steve this is great... Your work is paying off. Tough subject, if you'd exposed for the shadowed tail you'd have blown the whites in the face and wing... given the conditions I think this is perfect.

Great capture, I really like that wing. The dark tail should be easy to brighten up in PS. :)

Very nice shot. The tail, as you know, is very dark anyway - so it doesn't take away from the image. You have adequate space for him to fly into and you have him tack sharp. For me, it works, really works. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations Steve. I know how hard you have worked on getting these boys in flight. Not an easy task for sure. A little steep on the angle but the detail on the underwing and those colors, sweeeet stuff my friend.... 8)
