Wonderful image of the bird. I find the background distracting. Is this captive in a zoo? Looks man made.

Thanks yr comments. No is in a small harbour. Agree background is distracting........, tried extending the water but couldn't get the right focus effect. Had to clone out "the boat" behind his head, but got exasperated in the end, & haven't done as good a job as I should have.

Amazing that you got away with just 1/80s ...
Good effort, Guy!

Thanks KK.......... had a feeling the "fluff up" was coming after feeding, so thought I would try & get the head in focus when he pushed it forward, knowing I'd get a bit of "movement" blur in the wings & feathers for effect.
Also reduced the focal length a little, so the focus area would be greater & have less chance of losing definition on the beak (think that's right)
Unfortunately got an odd effect on the water to boot.

Need a lot more work on my technique, but will continue practicing on a Chinese Pond Heron this weekend.

That's an interesting pose, nice to see the fluffed up feathers. The head looks a little soft to me.

I like the fluff. But the 1/80 SS still caused a little motion blur to show up in the head. The bill and eye are a quite soft. I noticed you shot at ISO200. I would consider ISO 400 on the next go to increase your shutter speed if the light isn't helping. A sharp image with a little noise beats a soft image any day, IMO. Good luck with the heron.

Too bad about the BG & motion blur. If this guy is around all the time, you might want to go back and try again at a higher ISO as Wayne suggested and position yourself differently for a more appealing BG if possible. It looks like a little FF might have helped too, at least at this angle. Love the fluff and that orange eye!
