If you're into Gulls, and you haven't seen one of these, you'll need to come to North East China.

The Relict Gull is probably the rarest Gull in the world. So little was known about this species, that when the Seabirds book was first published in 1983, the illustrator had to guess what the bird would look like in winter plumage and they didn't even go that far for the plumage shown here in this image, which is 1st winter. the bird breeds in isolated wetlands in Mongolia, but is seen infrequently here in Beidaihe. There are so few of them, that wintering grounds are as yet unknown.

I photographed 5 of them at point blank range yesterday afternoon near our home. Shortly after we found China's second ever Franklin's Gull!!!

I have added a photo Essay to that gallery telling a fuller story of the day...: http://www.naturescapes.net/phpBB3/view ... hp?t=49566

Thrilling day & an excellent photo.
Not qualified to find any nits, but to me it looks perfect except for a very slight halo - wonderful image.

Maybe there are some other treasures to be found up there. :)

I'd say "Quite a day" indeed. In addition, this is a beautiful photo. The more I looked at it, the more I appreciated it. Great exposure and pose. Wonderful detail.

Alister this is excellent--even if was a common gull. The fact that it's so rare puts it over the top.

The translucent wing and tail feathers are interesting. This would be a very good shot if were just a common gull. For such a rarity it is something else :D

A brilliant shot of this little known gull, Alister!
In fact my book says "it passes through Beidahei" ...

Was waiting for you to comment on this one ;) I figured this may be a pelagic type bird you don't have yet on your list :)

Wonderful shot Alister of such an awesome rare gull. Cheers.
