Kinglets are a bear to photograph. It's not that they are shy. This little guy was so tame he actually landed on my leg at one point during our photo session. The problem is that they are "absurdly active" according to Sibley, or "absurdly hyperactive" according to me. Getting one tightly framed and focused with a big lens is like trying to catch a fly with chopsticks. On top of that, they are always buried in their habitat. Rarely will one come out and perch in the open, and when it does, there's always a busy background just inches behind it.
I have given up trying to work individual birds. If you can find a little flock of them, your odds increase. Eventually one will settle down and rest for a few seconds. Fire away. And when you get the little bugger in Photoshop, blur the background.

A.J. This is awesome. They are, as you mentioned a really tough bird to get in the frame. This shot is just great. I love the little perch and the flowers. I would give the bird another shot of USM.

Alan:

You are right, I did forget the USM. Also forgot to convert to sRGB. Here's another try, and I hope I haven't neglected anything this time. A mind is a terrible thing to lose.

Dynomite shot. You are so right about how hard it is to catch one of these birds still long enough to capture an image.

Excellent job catching this tough customer. They are never in the open when I have a camera with me. The repost is much better.

Now wait a minute, AJ!
Your title is misleading.

I know for a fact that kinglets can never be observed, much less photographed, "resting" !!!

Very good shot!

Second version ROCKS :D ! These guys are very tough to get framed let alone with the nice flowers in the BG. Great job!

Oh, aj, this is so exceptional! I've seen pictures in books,, but have yet to see one of these sweet little kinglets. They are so dear with those big eyes. Wonderful shot!

Wow....what a feat this is to get one....much less a clean and sharp image. I fully well understand your plan for shooting them. It certainly worked in this case. Great job!
