Ruddy Duck - Phoenix, Arizona
EOS 20D, 300mm, 2x

Of all of the norhtern hemisphere's duck species, the Ruddy Duck is the last to achieve full breeding plumage. It typically begins to happen in late February or March making it a true candidate for the motif :)

For me the Ruddy will always be the sassy little scruff of the duck world E.J.! Their bills have a permanent smile, and their little tails are always held up so proudly - but look like a hairdresser's nightmare. I love 'em!!! This lovely shot shows what I mean so perfectly. :D 8) 8) 8) 8)

That's a beauty! We get them up here once every 20 years or so I'm told (had a 20 year visit last year which I documented with really poor quality photos). Looks a little dark/contrasty on my LCD screen at work but man what a great bill and wonderful chestnut colored body.

Great image EJ. Great detail in the head and sweet water.

Shame you decapitated the reflection...

EJ--another great image. I've worked the Ruddy's quite a bit and they have the most interesting display routine. In SD a trio of them gave me a full demonstration of their courtship and display routines. I captured a lot of it, but the 600f4 was only a "dream" for me then, so the images are rather small. Wish mine had been as good as this one. Thanks for sharing.

EJ: we have a lot of Ruddy Ducks at Miami Metro Zoo but they don't quite come out this good! For me is hard to balance the whites and balcks both with detail. This image is great the background awesone. As always, nicely done!
