Image shot recently at Venice Rookery. Not sure if this behavior is used to attract a mate? Can anyone elaborate on this?

Rich, I think you are right, I do the same thing :) It's a great shot. I wish you had more room for the feet.

Great shot Ricard, love the pose. Wish for a little more room for the feet though.

More room for the feet would be nice, but this is still a great shot.

An excellent behavior shot - pretty bird. Even with the tight feet, this is great.

Great shot Rich...looking forward to shooting the Scrub Jays with you.

All the Best, Jean

P.S. Did anyone mention the feet?

This is sweet. I have seen them do this,a nd they usually emit a weird call a few seconds beforehand so you can get ready. I have seen mated pairs do this, usually a minute or two before the mate comes to the nest.

very nice
4 down, 2 to go.

I'll try this at the weekend, think it'll work ?
Might need advice on the weird call though.

Well exposed, nice bg, great behaviour.

The feet have been mentioned, but I'd love to have this one. I'll have to get there one day.

Nice shot!
Beautifully elegant as others have commented.
The sequence I have observed is that the bird often extends its head forward and downward, often clacking its bill before slowly raising its head into this position. It's a beautiful and attention-grabbing sequence, apparently to prospective mates as well as to us. One of the great pleasures of our thing is getting to watch and capture such beauty.
Congratulations.

I understand why people want more room for the feet, but I think in this case zooming out to include the feet would have diminished the emphasis on the upper part of the bird, which is the subject.

Tom,
I agree with you. Often times, I see photos criticized for cutting off the feet or not giving enough space at the bottom and, in most cases, I agree with the criticism. But -- I also see images that I think would lose some of their impact if the photographer backed off or re-framed the photo.
I have to confess though that I really like closeups and some people prefer a more distant -- or environmental -- perspective and object to the crowding of the image on any border.

These are all valid points and it comes down, sometimes, to personal preference.

Excellent capture of this display, Rich. I've seen this position often enough in mating and non-mating seasons but have no idea what it means. The missing feet not a big deal.
