Laughing Gull - Cape May, New Jersey
EOS 1VHs, 600mm, Provia 100F

This shot was taken in 2001 on the weekend after the 9/11 disaster, just moments before the sun went down. I remember this trip well because I was on the very first flight cleared to go out of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport after the airways were re-opened. It was a US Airways A320 that had 5 people on board.

Sweet capture, and thanks for the memories. I have a son in the service, so I never forget.

Sweet light, would like this even better with more DOF to get the feet sharp. That time was a tough one for a lot of us.

Yeah me too but the shutter speed was down to 1/20 at f/5.6

Yikes! That's getting dim. Good work getting the head sharp.

Hi, EJ,

it's very very rare for me to pipe up with a nit on one of your images, but the image seems to lose a lot of detail around the eye. I am not sure why. I like the light.

It's rare that I post a film image, this was shot on pushed slide film so there is a dynamic range of only about 4 stops which is 2-5 stops less than digital (depending on the camera) so blacks tend to block up more.

I love the pose and low angle. The color almost makes it seem sepia toned which is very intriguing.

Nice image EJ--good work with the slow shutter speed.

EJ:

honestly not crazy about the lighting and contrast on this image.

But the symbolic emotion of the image weighs more important than the lighting. I was in NYC on 9/10 and almost stayed overnight.
