Wow! Awesome capture, Chris! It looks a little grainy. Is it a big crop?

Thanks guys. Yes, in fact this is about 60% of the frame. I applied the beta PS CS Noise Ninja Plug-in for the first time - perhaps I'll have to spend more time getting familiar with it.

Anytime,EJ. Fly to Montreal and it's about a 2.5 hour drive. I'd be thrilled to show you around.

EDIT: I'll send you a PM.

Great capture, Chris! Congrats, especially that for the most of the day they were displaying to us the the end opposite to the head

Edit:
The more I look at it the more I like it. I am afraid I am getting jealous. I hate you!

Chris,

Totally awesome. Are these and other owls more prevalent this year than in past years?

Chris,
Did you sharpen the whole image or selectively sharpen the bird? If you sharpened the whole image, selectively sharpening just the bird should get rid of the bg grain. If you selectively sharpened the bird and the grain is from the crop, then you can select the bg, contract the selection slightly, and use the blur tool to blur the bg and remove the grain. This is a spectacular shot and fixing the grain would be a worthwhile effort, IMO.

I'm with Jim. Gauusian blur on the BG and its more of a killer than it already is!

Thanks again, guys. Jim, I've heard that the vole population is at a peak, promising lots of owls.

Thanks Jim, I'll spend some time on this one for sure. Your comments are always appreciated, and I'll be sure to give it a try.

Jeff, I said blur tool, not gaussian blur. Also, if it was not selectively sharpened, then just selectively sharpening without any blur may be best. My guess is it wasn't selectively sharpened because you shouldn't get this much grain even with a 40% crop. Selectively sharpening will also get rid of the slight halo beneath the bird's throat. I think the grain is from sharpening the bg. Chris??
