This shot is a personal favorite of mine. It was one of the first "real" bird photos that I ever took. After I saw this shot on my computer I remember thinking to myself, "hey, I can do this". I haven't looked back since. Isn't bird photography just grand!

The lighting was perfect. No flash, just the beautiful California (setting) sun. The image is full-frame and was shot from a kayak.

Hope you enjoy it.

Beautiful light indeed and with great details, Dash!
Just wish there was more room atop ...

This would get me started in bird photography too. I too wish the wings were not clipped at the top.

Very nice detail in there. You could easily recreate the wing at the top but this is nice as it is. I hope you did not move from California back to MI - what were you thinking.

don't encourage him Dan! He already has a signature that reads "michigan, unfortunately"

As for the photo.. i love the rich colors and contrast on the wings. It's nice you were parallel to it when it stretched ..
I can see why you got "hooked" :)

I like the cropping of the wings, it makes it different. The detail is great!

Thanks everyone. I'm with Georgina here, I like the clipped wing at the top. To me it leads the eye off of the picture then back (with the curve of the wing). It gives the impression that the bird can't be "contained". Of course, its easy to like it that way when you have to! Ha!

For me this pic's main strength is in the feather detail on the belly and chest.

Awesome detail -- I like the change to a tighter frame to yield a more intimate look. Well Done.

I agree, the detail is great. I am one who wishes the wing wasn't clipped, your out-and-in curve thing isn't working for me   . Overall, an excellent shot!

A real beauty and I like the different composition. If only the top of the wing weren't clipped. Thanks for posting this one.
