At our Nature Center, the early evenings are like Grand Central Station in New York. Scout troops, families with running and screaming kids and joggers on the paths. As I was getting that feeling of being shut out, I saw a tiny sliver of a bill peeking through the grass. I moved around and could see that hidden from all the pedestrians was this Heron. I found a trail through the high grass on the other side of an inlet to the pond and the Heron was visible from this vantage point but hidden from the public. I carefully edged closer, a couple of steps per minute until the Heron became less wary and set up my tripod. This shot is with my Nikon D70, 300mm 2.8 AF, 1.4X TC, tripod at -0.3 compensation.

I agree with Alan....nice composition but perhaps just a tad more USM. Good job of moving on this guy......unless I'm in Florida, I usually can't get anywhere close to them.

Normally I would like isolating the birds but the BG works very well, I like it. Would only use more USM (as previously mentioned) and maybe move the bird back in the frame a bit

Congratulations!!!!

Nice shot. Agree about the sharpening and also would suggest shooting these guys at -0.7 to keep the whites better under control. I usually overcook the area around their eyes.
