I do not know the name of this bird. I am just now starting to become acquainted with the names but I have seen this bird often in Kansas but do not know what it is called. It is common but I thought that it looked nice on the reed and it posed for me. This was taken with my new Nikon D70, 300mm 2.8 AF with 1.4X converter. Cropped to vertical.
By the way, the Nikon D70 is a dandy supplement to my D1, Fuji S2 Pro and other assorted cameras. I love the speed of focus, the metering and most of all, I liked the price. This one is a keeper at twice the price.

Your bird is a female Red-winged Blackbird. A good clue probably would have been the males in the area!
This is a classic perch for this bird. Your background color is good and it's nicely out of focus. My nit is that the bird's head position leaves it dark, would be better if it was just turned a bit toward you. But you can't always get them to do what you want them to!

Mel,

This is a great pose for the blackbird. The head position really doesn't bother me except that I wish there was a little bit more of a catchlight in the eye. I think that would add a little bit of life to the face. I might also be tempted to give this another shot of USM as it appears that the head is maybe a tiny bit soft? It could just be my monitor.

Nice shot, keep 'em coming :)
