Taken on the Mississippi River in La Crosse, WI.

We have had literally hundreds (or thousands) of pelicans passing over the La Crosse area on their migration north and they often stop in the area to feed and rest. I decided to drive down to the river between business meetings and was greeted by approximately 100-150 White Pelicans wading in water near a park. I had enough time to get out of the car and throw my 70-200+2x on and snap some photos just as they started to depart.

Just as I was leaving I noticed another large group of about 50 pelicans arriving.

Canon EOS 10D
Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS + 2x MK II extender
1/500 sec
f/7.1
ISO 100
Cropped approx. 50% of frame.

Don't know why but I felt that the pelicans looked OK right above the middle of the frame and just below the top third.

Maybe more of a pano crop for me. The whites are a little hot. Love the breeding plumage bump on the bills.

Agree with Alan on a pano crop. I like the varying wing positions. 8)
