Coscoroba Swan (Coscoroba coscoroba)
Crandon Park, Key Biscayne, FL, on 24 Mar 2004

Once upon a time there was a magical park inhabited by rare and exotic birds. On a warm day in winter, a young man swan and a young woman swan met and immediately fell in love. They could not be without each other for even a minute of the day. Near a white picket fence, the swans built a lovely nest and began to care for eggs that the female laid. Day in and day out, both swans sat on the nest together and kept the eggs warm. Although the eggs should have hatched within five weeks, nothing happened. Steadfastly the swans sat on the nest while cuddling and preening each other. After two months the swans still care for the eggs and hope for the chicks to appear. Everyone at the park gives them support and hopes that a miracle will occur.

I apologize for the mediocre image, but the story is true. The swans are still cuddling near the picket fence (not shown) and waiting for non-viable eggs to hatch. This is their first mating experience and they cannot accept failure. A touching tale ….

BTW, the Coscoroba is the smallest swan in the world. It has characteristics of whistling ducks as well as swans. During nesting, both male and female lose their ability to fly, an interesting and possibly dangerous adaptation provided by Mother Nature.

Take a series and write a children's book for parents to read to kids about these two. REALLY!! I like your narrative and it makes the image work.

What a great way to start the morning off for me. Pictures may be worth a 1000 words but a clarifying paragraph can add amazing value. Very Nice post. Thanks Sandy.

The devotion that Swans show their life long mate, and their offspring is so touching. They are, without doubt one of my favourite birds, and the little Coscorobas have such a sweet, innocent expression.

This image and your wonderful story have finished me off for the day now Sandy! I shall be wrung out and hung up to dry.

Thankyou for your sensitive rendering of both image and description. 8)

Lovely picture and very sweet story. The Redbreasted Grebes many photographers shot last summer in the Bronte Harbour had about 8-10 eggs, none of which hatched. This pair cared for the nest and eggs for months.

Much later, the local enthusiasts put out another tire for the second pair of Grebes, they produced two chicks.

Wonderful story,Sandy.

The image is more than mediocre. The techs are the usual Sandy special. If I could change something it would be the background.

Sandy, I know about twelve Guinea Hens that are willing to be adopted by this pair, mind you that they don't look much like them and are not willing to go into the water either!!! , a Sad and touching story , but at least so far they have survived the killer Crock , and that is in itself a blessing !!
I suspect that nothing short of shock therapy is the only viable option left for the Coscorobas, the eggs must be removed pronto and the nest dismantled, otherwise many health issues regarding their well being will arise if nothing is done ASAP, I am calling Valerie as we speak!!

Update from Valerie!!!!

The Coscorobas did abandoned the nest a couple days ago, later the Crows came and ate what was left of them!!, I am sure they will nest another time!!!, And life goes on!!!

Sandy,

This is a very nice image of these wonderful little swans. The position of the two birds works well.

Sandy, I had a similar experience with Red-whiskered Bulbuls in my inside atrium. Lengthy unfruitful nesting the first year ... however, two broods a year ever since. Let's hope that next year at this time you'll be posting images of Coscoroba tots from this wonderful and loyal pair!! Thanks, as always, for sharing this fine image and touching narrative.

A sad story Sandy, similar to one locally involving Mute Swans and egg oiling to prevent hatching. The eggs were sat on for 2 months or so. I've never seen this species.
