I was very happy to see the red-breasted nuthatches return to my feeders on Sunday. I decided I wanted close-ups today and wouldn't have tried this using film. Very overcast and raining.

10D, 500 4.5, 36mm extension tube, 1/125, f5.6, 400iso, manual focus, Flash -1. Small crop off the right.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

A truly excellent shot, Eleanor!
I especially like the dark green BG that help making the subject pops. If anything, I think a little more dof will bring the tail and feet into focus. This may not be possible given that you were shooting with an extension tube already.

Thanks for the suggestions! I probably could have used less shutter speed and added more for DOF. It was a really gray day. I gave it one shot of USM at 100, .5, 0. I tried a second one and it produced too many artifacts so dropped back.

Great job Eleanor. I've been trying for the past several weeks to get these guys into range in my backyard and unfortunately have been unsuccessful. The background is excellent.

This is wonderful, Eleanor. The pose is classic nuthatch, the background is perfect. This works well for this week's motif theme too. :)

Eleanor, this reminds me of the nuthatches that were the first visitors to my first bird feeder. Very nice shot.

Very nice, Eleanor. You would have been hard-pressed to increase the DOF with ISO already at 400 and SS at only 1/125. Good job on this.

I photographed an RB Nuthatch on Sunday also but I like your photograph a lot better. You didn't have to drive 1 1/2 hours from your home to the SoCalifornia mountains to find one either.

I wouldn't sacrifice any shutter speed for DOF--especially for a quick moving bird like this one. It looks fantastic.

The overcast light sems to be very kind to the color saturations. Love your bird.

Nice pose, BG and tree stump. I wish he was a little smaller in the frame.

:D :D The Nuthatch stands beautifully in that BG. Very nice capture; they don't stay still for very long.
