Chinese Pond Heron

A Chinese Pond Heron up close ... :roll:
The shot was taken two weeks ago at a nature reserve here in Hong Kong.

EOS-10D, EF500/4L IS + EF1.4x
Evaluative @ -1/3, ISO 200

I like the delicate detail in the feathers on his back. Looks liek teh jpeg compression struggled with that.

Love the subtle colouring of the background and body feathers of the bird! and then there is the unsubtle colouring of the beak :o It must be breeding season!

The breeding plumage of this bird would have been wine-red, slaty-blue and white ... :wink:

Colorful bird well composed and his hairdo is stunning. Is the top of the head feathering always like this or does that occur when the bird is alert and psyched?

Actually I caught this raised head feather by chance. This guy was alerted by something passing by ...
