Six hrs in a blind yielded only eight images, but if I could get one like this every six hours, I would gladly do it all the time. Lasting for only a brief moment, the background is morning sunlight reflected off marsh reeds 200 yards away. I constantly metered for the background before the bird landed, filling in the kingfisher with strobe upon its arrival. I only had time for three images before the bird took off on its territorial rounds. Metering for this most important element beforehand was key.

D1X, 400 f/2.8AFS, fill flash w/ better beamer, blind

Best and shoot the light,

Chas

Great shot and the background sings. What type of meter do you use. I want to replace my Seconic 508 which disappeared on my last drive trip along with the GPS. I know the type is not as important as the nut behind the instrument, but I would appreciate the info since I have to get another meter anyway.
Thanks

Hey Chas,

gorgeous image, of course. Looks like your strobe was significantly off camera, was it outside the blind? Also, did you only use one flash? And do you ever use a softbox or equivalent strobe diffuser in the field? You must have been awfully close, with a 400, to fill the frame like this. Very good work in the field is required to get these kinds of shots ... well done man.

Cheers

Carl

Chas, This image drives home the advantage of using a hide. Well done m8t.

Can't beat the subject or background. I sure would have fun making a print of such a beautiful subject. This is a gorgeous shot Chas.

Not probably, but definitely, the best portrait of a kingfisher I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. Just an amazing shot and one of my favorites. Hard work and perseverance paid off big dividends!

This is absolutely gorgeous! I love the BG. I should buy a blind! Do you have any recommendations? It looks a bit oversharpened on my (not good) monitor.

Stunning! By far the best kingfisher image I have ever seen. Excellent work Chas. Your wait certainly paid off big time.
