Rattler

On my way back to the parking lot at Bolsa Chica today when someone mentioned that there was a snake in the rocks just a couple of meters off the path. It had eleven rattles FWIW. I don't know how many times they molt in the course of a year so I've no clue as to how old it is. I would guess that it was about 2 1/2 or 3 feet long but I may be wrong about that too.

Canon 10D, Canon 100-400, Canon 550EX with Lepp's "Project-A-Flash"
SS: 1/160, Aperture: f/13, ISO: 200.

I'm always impressed by images of these guys. Next time perhaps you could reach in there and move his head out a bit so we can see the pits better.
