We had a "welcoming committee" of one as we walked up from the float plane that had taken us from Ketchican to Neets Bay in the Tongass National Forrest. This big black bear was wandering around the beach close to the dock looking for a snack. Actually, he decided to make it easy on himself when he discovered that the door was ajar on one of the big salmon fingerling food storage buildings. Neets Bay is also the site of a salmon hatchery which makes it a great attraction to bears as well as people wanting to see bears. Needless to say this photo was NOT taken a 90mm.

What a cool shot and experience! I'd try a little shadow recovery to try to draw more out of the bear's coat.

Great action of movement with the paws.....One big bear for sure and that smile says even more about what he might be thinking would be a good lunch.

Great job with a tough exposure. Nice details in the muzzle and on the ground. That's one big blackie!

Thanks to all of you for your comments on this photo. We saw about 6 individual bears on this excursion and I was surprised at the size of these guys. They were more the size that I would have expected from Brown Bears. I guess it helps when your home is in a nice dense forest with a salmon hatchery in the neighborhood. I saw one of the bears laying on the beach near the hatchery operation just waiting for the salmon to swim by. Who says animals are dumb.

Difficult lighting well handled Linda! I like the face on catch of the Bear and your story adds a lot of interest. Nice one. 8) 8) 8) :)

Great shot. I like the raised paw and he looks like a healthy bear. Nice job!
