One of Alberta's finest.....
Image
10D 70-200 ...
from behind a couple of trees I'm brave but not stupid shssh :)

Along our many km this past July/ Aug our trip west included a stop over in Jasper for a 1/2 day. Not much time to scout around but enough to capture a few landscape and the occasional elk or mountain goat..besides there are way too many people in the parks at this time of year. :?

Thanks for looking Comments always welcome.

Boy, he's a big'un :)

Excellent shot, comp is just about perfect and the head turn and eye contact make the shot.

Nice Rack!

I'm not sure what I feel about the overall composition, though--I don't like half the body being cut off. I'd prefer to see either more or less of it. The background is a bit distracting, too.

Still, a nice shot. Despite going to Jasper several times each year, I have a grand total of one slide of an elk (and it's not as nice as this). I simply refuse to be part of the tourist elk watching groups!

Despite the crowds in the summer, it's still my favourite time to visit Jasper, because there's so much more to see! Besides, most tourists sleep in--get up early and you can be nearly alone in many places.

This one took 5 minutes to open on a T1 line and it gave up about halfway down. Your host is ultra slow. Its a great shot though from what I can see.

I'll echo E.J.s comment. I don't often comment on your posts, Doug, simply because they take far too long to load. I waited on this one, because it's from my home turf...

Thanks guys for the comments on the image and indication of our host problems. see problems on my other posts as well.

over the past week it seems that our double hopping satelite link to the real world has been very slow. I should be using the NSN upload service :) will replace these with the new link.

Just now it loaded fairly fast so it must have been an issue earlier this morning.

One great rack. I've always been amazed how tourists will surround these and fail to realize they're wild and capable of impaling them.

Elk are by far the most dangerous animals in Canada's mountain parks, statistically speaking.

I watched an elk getting very agitated as a photographer cornered it on a spit of land heading into a lake. I was just driving by and didn't see the results, though...

In Banff, they're working on an aversive program to scare the elk away from town and make them fear people. I'm not sure how well it's working, but I saw a film clip where a warden demonstrates how the elk are now scared of the sound of a shotgun's action being racked! Rubber bullets fired from a shotgun are one of the aversive techniques. If the elk hadn't run off at the sound, he would have gotten a nasty shock!

Nice looking bull. Although the BG is a bit busy the part that bugs me the most is that curved brach touching hsi chin. Other than that nit very nice.

Bill

Great looking elk with an awesome rack. I don't personally care for the midbody crop but I like the rest of it.

Sweet shot. Looks like the rack had a lot to do with the crop.

Awesome rack - and like the look back at you. Have mixed sentiments about the crop, but it looks like the rack was the constraint. Were you closer to 70 or 200? Either way, I hope you were between two narrowly-spaced trees. :)
