Well if we've had lots of spotted big cats posted, it's only appropriate to see some of their dedicated enemies. I think it's more of a challenge to get a good hyena shot than a good leopard shot, at least once you've spotted it. A leopard, if it's willing, will look you right in the eye. A hyena is likely to slink away as soon as spotted. :)

These cubs were in a den in the Ngorongoro Crater in 2001. (Went back in 2002 but no one was there.) Everyone was asleep and had no inclination to get up and play despite our long wait.

I should have mentioned that you have two types of hyenas, spotted and striped. The latter are much rarer in Tanzania at least and are solitary hunters usually spotted only at night. The spotted, like these, are pack hunters.

D30, 100-400 at 250, 1/160, f7.1, ISO 100.

Rich,

Very cool shot. Family nap time and no concerns in the world. Now I remember, it was a hyena that had my leopard climbing the little tree. Exposure is excellent. I like this one a lot.

I have a soft spot for these creatures Rich, we had a den right near our camp in Botswana and Mum and the babies would visit most nights. I know a lot of people don't like them, but they have their place in the overall scheme of things.

Nice shot with good detail.
