This image i shot today along the delaware river from my car. The table and chairs are faceing the river which is apart of someones? front yard.

This image is resized and auto colored with no sharpening. Can anyone explain the ridges in the chairs and tables? This happens during downsizing and im guessing its due to compression. Any tips or ways to avoid this as its really bugging me would be very appreciated!!

Thanks for looking,
robert........

It's just a bit of aliasing and as you surmised, it's from compression. There's not much you can do about it except sharpen it a touch less aggressively.

Robert...I downloaded the image and took out some of the sharpening a bit which helped a little. You can also in a case like this apply a small Gaussian Blur to the image first and then apply USM. You could also blow it up to about 300 or 400% and very lightly blur the edges. Here it is with less sharpening:

Robert- When you downsize choose BiLinear instead of BiCubic. This will help a bit. You say there is no sharpening? Looks very sharp straight from the camera.

Cool shot by the way. Like the feel. Simple but different.

Thanks guys,

Dan, yes no sharpening for this as i didnt have a choice. I tried bilinear, bicubic and the girl next door and they all seemed to be about the same. These ridges have become more noticeable and frustrating to me for about a week now as i downsize. Im not sure but could this be happeneing to only images taken with my 300mm? Hmmm.........

Also i forgot to mention  i cropped about 10pxls off the top and left side, could this be the cause?

Hi Robert,

Can't really add anything to the jaggies question but I will add that I like the image. I get the impression that this table and chairs set is almost up in the clouds and that creates all kinds of funny connotations in my head. Very creative eye you have to see the potential in this scene. I wonder if this will end up as one of your PS composites? I like it just like this.
