Hello, everyone. This buck is part of a small herd that lives on the hill behind our house during the winter. They're gradually getting used to our presence, and don't run off as fast when we go outside now. I was standing about 20 feet from the backdoor when I took this shot this afternoon.

The entire hillside was in shade, so I used flash to try to liven it up, but I can't decide whether or not this looks overflashed. I cropped this a bit from the bottom to get rid of some sage that caught too much flash, then took a little off the other sides to even out the composition. I also cloned out the second catchlights from the flash.

10D, 100-400 at 400, 550EX at -1, handheld. ISO 400, 1/100 sec at f/8.

Thanks for looking. Comments and suggestions for improvement are always welcome.

Nice portrait. this does not look overflashed to me. What a wonderful thing to have hanging around the backyard. i look forward to seeing more 'backyard' shots.

Excellent portrait. The flash looks well balanced to me.

Hey Tom,

Great buck!

The flash looks wonderfully done to me. The composition though, slightly stifles the image, IMO. (FWIW, I think it's about impossible to get a really good portrait of any ungulate like this, without including more of the body). I'd also be tempted to play with burning parts of the rack down to maybe get them to stand out more from the b/g.

Cheers

Carl

Just looking at the shot, I wouldn't have guessed flash. Very nicely done. Nice back yard! Only thing I would be tempted to do different is rotate clockwise a couple of degrees. Shot might be level as it stands but the pose of the buck would look a little more relaxed if rotated IMO.

Beautiful portrait Tom. This is lovely just as it is. The pose with the head slightly on one side and the expression in those gentle eyes is gorgeous and the crop is just perfect.

Very well done and how lucky you are to have these so close to home.
