A selective focus portrait of a mantis taken this September:
Image
Canon 10D, 300/4, 500D, F14, 1/500

The 500D is great for simplifying backgrounds. This mantis was on a stalk a few inches from the grassy ground, but you'd never know.

 Man, looks like the last thing that a hapless insect would see.
Very nice use of DOF to isolate the face. I really like that the legs are also in focus too.

Hi Tom---this just floors me; the effect is so intriguing, i.e., one of the animal's more obvious attributes, its eye, has become jewel-like. The particular expression that is suggested by the angle of the eye "dots" adds to the effect.

Two distinct points of interest that are well captured and really pulls my eye in on this one.
Wonderful comp and lighting, and the colors involved are perfect that sets the mantis off!!

This one is cool! 8)

The shallow DOF isolating the head from the torso adds a very nice 3D effect.
