Photographed on Saltee Island, Ireland last June.
This razorbill had it's burrow underneath this lichen covered rock. Every day we were there it did perform some wing exercise before flying off to sea to fish.

D2x, 200-400/4 VR, 1/1250 @ f/6,3, ISO 160, tripod, fill flash

Seems like only an anhinga will give you this pose and look back at you with a head turn completely, oh and vultures. My dream is to get a wood duck doing this....Good luck--- huh. That blue is interesting it's the water Bart? I like the stark color contrasts. A little head turn is all for this one , but it's really cool anyhow.

Bart,

The wings, the water, the rock, the bird, This ROCKS!

Great job on a difficult exposure. What method did you use to come up with the desired exposure?

Great Job!

Absolutely marvelous! Razorbills are so much harder to get right than puffins... I especially like the reflex of light comeing from the eye.

Thanks for your comment Brian, I used spotmetering for this shot (metered a couple of shots previous to this one when the bird was facing us). Exposed for the whites and used fill flash to get detail in the dark plumage.

Great capture of a very beautiful bird. Feathers look so smooth. Wonderful exposure considering the huge tonal range here. I would like to see the crop perhaps a bit tighter along the bottom and the bird a little left in the frame if you had the real estate :)
