Baboon - Phoenix, Arizona (captive)
EOS 10D, 100-400 @ 400mm, 1/60, f/8, Fill @ -2, ISO 400

The Phoenix Zoo is arranged such that it is very difficult to photograph most mammals on a sunny day since for almost every exhibit you are facing south, into the sun. We only have 25 overcast days on average per year so when they occur on a weekend, its a great time to go to the zoo to photograph some of the mammals there. Today was such a day and I was pleased to see this Baboon in gorgeous colors posing for me.

Excellent portrait E.J. however this is not a baboon. This is a Mandrill. Very nice one too.

Very nice- this guy doesn't very often come out and show himself like this! Way to take advantage of the clouds this morning.

I don't know much about primates and their relatives. I was reading the sign and it seemed to use Mandrill and Baboon synonymously. Thanks for the correction.

Sorry, I guess you are correct. A mandrill is a member of the baboon group, Mandrillus sphinx I usually think of the Olive baboon as the common one we all call baboons.

The overcast light was perfect for this! I can only shoot them through glass here and when they are outside there is mesh and bars. He has a velvia face.

Incredible face and nice soft light for it, as you say. I'd like it better without the stump, probably, with a longer lens. But there's poignancy here, a sense of discomfort with being on display and a desire to hide behind the stump, that I like.

It's actually a big rock but yes I agree with the feeling that this evoked.

A nice change of pace from the cliched open mouth tight head shot I usually see of this species.

I think he needs to work on his camoflage technique - even hiding behind the rock I can still clearly see him :D

Fabulous detail and pattern in this face, I wonder whether a zoomed full frame of just the face might work?

Regards

John

I don't remember signing a model release. :D

Wonderful shot, and a pleasant surprise since I was expecting an olive baboon. It's such a contemplative, almost sad look that's so wonderfully different from the normal shot of these guys. Simply killer.

What an alien looking creature! I love the face and the fingers on the rock - excellent capture.
