Caspian tern trying to intimidate me...
Nikon D70
Nikkor 300/4
Not the prettiest of pictures, but holding my ground was a lot of fun... It's a low yield type of shot, and I only got a few in focus out of all the times I tried.

This is awesome Bob. I wish the bird was farther into the right of the frame w/ the outstretched wing taking up the rest of the space... but how can i be nitpicking this, just getting it sharp would be hard enough.

Cool shot. Objects in the mirror may be closer than you think. :)

Lol... other than the odd bit of guano, I came out of it unscathed... the biologist that I was sharing images with, wasn't quite as lucky... one clipped him and peeled his scalp back a bit.

Most of the time, I think I was just a bit of sport for them... there was only once, where one reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeealy seemed perturbed. It attacked about 20 times and never relented until another tern showed up and became the target of it's aggression... after that, it went after a swan. Usually, they would take just one or two runs at me and then continue on about their business.

Thanks Chris. They don't give me much of an opportunity to compose... Keeping the bird in the center of the frame is as much of a defensive maneuvre as it is good shooting practice... ;-)

When they have the one wing up like that, they are already committed to their banking maneuvre, but I really can't tell at the time... things are just happening too fast and it's all I can do to follow the flight of the bird.
