Image
Gannet (Morus bassanus) – Saltee, Ireland.

Canon EOS 10D, 600/f4 IS, gitzo 1548/1381/wimberley head.
Manual exposure mode f7.1, 1/1000, iso 200, AWB.
RAW image processed in Capture One; sharpened in Photoshop CS; full frame.

I’ve been using this image to test the new Epson R1800 printer so I thought I might as well post it, together with my thoughts on the printer; I have been using an Epson 1290 until now.

The R1800 is a bit larger than the 1290; in operation it is much, much quicker and virtually silent – all plus points over the older model. I’m a little disappointed with some aspects of its performance, however. Blue tones were always a bit of a problem on the 1290, which always had a bit too much magenta present. This aspect has been improved in R1800 – in addition to the CYMB colours, the R1800 has a blue cartridge and a red cartridge.

The disappointing aspect of the R1800 is the more restricted range of tones at the extremes - the blacks and the whites. There is a significantly greater range of tones in the underwing of the gannet and in the black parts of the primaries when this image is printed on the old 1290 than there is when it is printed using the R1800, even using the new R1800 driver and profiles released last week. Photography – its always a compromise.

Nice job on exposure, I've always liked the texture of the feathers on these birds.

Lovely shot Phil. Excellent composition and way to fill the frame.

colours are nice, and the exposure is spot on. Don't have any shots of these myself, yet!! How did you find the Saltees as a matter of interest?? Been meaning to go there for some time but can't ever seem to get away.

Would love to see more shots from there.

All the best, Gearoid

Outstanding capture, Phil. Have you tried creating your own profile with eye one photo or spider?

This brings back fond memories of seeing the Gannets in Newfoundland. Gorgeous flight shot of a most stunning bird.
