I went to Wako yesterday with Fab and my new 500. I decided it was as good a time as any to test the long range capabilities of the lens. I saw this bird way, way across the water and decided to mount a 2 x converter and see what happened. The shot is cropped somewhat heavily but I'm pleased with the outcome. I am amazed at how easy it is to shoot with this lens. it is just a whole other world! It just allows you to make shots that would be impossible otherwise.
Plus, it is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up. I love Ferris Bueller

Here is a repost with the cropping suggestions

Hey, this is excellent Si, great bg :!:
I like mine so much I may get a second one

I would crop some from letf and top, personal preference.
Your whites came out very good, love the breeding colors :D

I wanted to crop even more but I'm hesitant to be left with too low a resolution

Great shot Simon, amazing to get that detail at 500mm w/ 2x. Great job on comp and love the bg. I purchased the 500 a few weeks ago and am very happy with it. Yesterday I tried an experiment by using the 1D M2 plus a 1.4x Tokina/Kenko (they are very thin) plus a 2 x II Canon for a total of 1400 mm. I was able to maintain full auto-focus and the shots are pretty well detailed. I may post one next time just as an example of this technique.
Just havin' fun

Looks good! Nice job holding the whites and I think the details are just fine considering the distance and the 2x.

Light is a little harsh. underexppsing a bit more would help tone the whited down, and perhaps adding some flash to reduce the contrast.

Glad to see you're having fun with the new toy! This looks pretty nice as shown. When you repost, could you please leave the original too, so those of us coming later can see the "before" and "after"? thanks!!

I can't tell you what a difference getting the 500mm was for me. It opened up a whole new world.....as it has for you. Beautiful colors on this guys as well as a nice pose. When I first got mine, I did a lot of distance shooting with and without the teleconverters just to see what would be an acceptable range and what the cropping limitations were. You're sure off to a nice start with this one.
