A male ruff, molting into breeding plumage; taken from a permanent hide in a local naturereserve, Gent, Belgium; unfortunately the bg was busy with not much space to move around ( had to clone out one grasstem, running through the bird's eye!) and the bird was really skittisch;

Hi Herman, nice species you've shot here...I still kind of like the setting....but the eye doesn't look that sharp anymore after the cloning.

Ehm...what happened to your equipment? Weren't you using a Nikon D1? :roll:

Excellent capture for this skittish bird, Herman!
The head is a little soft as focus seems to be just behind it ... :roll:

Herman, you did well witht his skittish little bird. Perhaps a little more USM on the head?

I like it, Herman. I agree with a bit more selective sharpening of the head. Also, enhancement of a catchlight, if one exists.

I agree with the others. It looks like the plane of focus might be on the weeds behind the bird. There does seem to be a catchlight which could be strengthened. Thanks for sharing.

Great to see this bird here and the molting plumage makes it even more interesting. Hope you can get some when these guys get their incredible breeding plumage. Maybe some flash would add some life but its not necessary in this one. Well done.

Love it Herman! My only wish is that the OOF grass on the right wasn't there...
