While feeling bemused by the huge no of identical crab spiders sitting on identical flowers, and thinking how monotonous the day has become, I chanced upon this solitary wasp flitting around. I think it was trying to find a perch to turn in for the day. Not sure if this is a Potter wasp or a  Mud dauber species. All have that long slender waist called a "petiole".

As flash was used, it lit up a blade of grass just behind the wasp. Its somewhat distracting....what do you think?

Anyway, something different from spiders. Hope its an interesting image and comments welcomed.

Superb details Darren. For me, it's sort of expected to catch other highlights in a natural environment so it's no deal breaking distraction.

I don’t find that at all objectionable -the colors as well as the excellent dof selection clearly draw the eye to the subject.  It adds a bit of texture and “place” (if any of that makes sense to anyone but me), but doesn’t draw the eye like an overly bright twig.  My $.02

EDIT: Nice flash work; I’ve all but abandoned flash with the digital darkroom - too many variables and little practical experience + added weight and clumsiness = too much headache for this hobbiest.

Excellent portrait in dramatic light. I don’t think the blade is a distraction, it adds depth to the image.

Thanks David, Craig, Tom and Carol !

Appreciate the thoughtful responses to my query.

Craig,
Definitely a lot of possibilities even without
adding a flash into the mix. Maybe need to be selective abt the time and place . I do find many natural light subjects have a more "nuanced" look which is highly appealing. Flash can be addictive though....over-reliance not too wise. ;)

I think it's all been said- an excellent use of flash- subtle and non-invasive.
