This wild horse is a member of the Salt River horses who live and roam in the Tonto National forest. They are believed to be descended from Horses brought over by Spanish explorers in the 1600s...

Thanks David! Its only been a years or so since I started shooting images and video of these beautiful animals.  You can see more images and some basic info about the Salt River horses here on my blog. There are only about 300 of them and they are actively managed.

Great setting for this horse and interesting light angle, too, Ray.

This poor grey horse has such a weary pose and gait and it can't be easy walking on those stones at this crossing. It seems like a harsh environment with the heat and poor forage for the horses to survive and the sun rays almost look like they've set the tail on fire. A thought provoking photo Ray.

Hi Carol, Thanks for your comments. These are tough and resourceful animals who have adapted to this desert environment over hundreds of years since they were brought over by the Spanish in the 1600s. The most surprising thing is how beautiful these wild horses are when you see them despite their environment they live in...

Really a beautiful and natural scene. The rays of the sun that appear on the right and illuminate the forehead of this gray horse, perhaps with a trotino coat. But I can't see very well.

Lovely light, especially including the rays facing the horse. I like the splash too, showing motion.
