New Sony 70-200 f/4 Macro

A new lens announcement that flew a bit under the radar is the new Sony 70-200mm f/4 OSS Macro II. For nature photographers this sounds like an exciting option since it does 0.5x through it's entire zoom range and is compatible with Sony's teleconverters for full 1:1 macro capability in addition to the classic 70-200mm zoom range.

By all reports a greatly improved lens versus the version 1. Lighter, smaller, better optics. However, the version II lens is not an internal zoom, which accounts for the shorter length. When it is zoomed out all the way it is actually longer than the version I (which was an internal zoom).

Before I tried it in the field, I thought I might trade-in my 100-400 to get the macro capabiity of the new 70-200/f4. My thinking now is to keep the 100-400. After trying the new 70-200/f4 in the field, I thought that the 100-400 gave me better distance from the subject; with the 70-200, I had to be too close causing the subject (butterfly/bee/whatever) to spook. Hopefully there will be a new 100-400 FE down the line built on the same design principles as the new 70-200/f4.
