This famous tree, rumoured to be over 300 years old, was cut down by vandals last night for reasons that are unclear at the moment.

Disgusting. Here in the US we’ve had similar acts of vandalism, like the destruction of a natural arch. I hope they take a chainsaw to the vandals netherregion.

I see they have arrested a 16 year old youth, Peter.  Such an iconic tree and so many beautiful photos of it - including yours.  Such a sick and mindless act of vandalism to destroy it.

Disgusting to do that to an iconic tree!!!

I passed by a large rock outcropping that I hadn't been by in a few years. It was completely covered with grafitti. It's along I-25, a major north-south route through NM. None of it was even legible, so all it did was ruin a scenic view. I don't understand that kind of mentality.

Following the arrest of the teenager, the police have now arrested a man in his 60's - while I can somewhat understand a stupid action by a teenager playing the 'big man' and destroying such an icon, wouldn't you think someone in their 60's would have more respect................or maybe not, with the state of the world today.

That answers a question I had... as to how a 16 year old got there with a chain saw.  (aka who owned the chain saw and what assistances did he receive as it looks like it was cut down professionally).

Either way, a sickness in our society all too evident nowadays, and a judicial system that is ineffective.
