These little guys are quite elusive usually. One day last spring my wife & I were outside fixing a window on our house, and my wife noticed a little head briefly peaking around the corner. We quickly left the window we were working on, and went around the side of the house to investigate. In the meantime, this marten climbed into the tree by our kitchen window and came out to the far branches to take a better look at us. I quickly ran inside the house and grabbed the camera. We managed to get a few quick frames off before he scuttled down and went on his merry way.

Shot from about 15 feet away with a Nikon F-60 & 70-300mm zoom. Left as full frame as I think this better portrays the marten in his natural setting (relatively small carnivore going up trees to look for birds, squirrels, etc. to eat).

Thanks for looking. Any comments or critiques are most welcome - especially on any scanning or Photoshop techniques!

I like it. With the overhanging branches, it's like he's peering out of a cave in the tree.

Wonderful shot of an elusive critter. For printing, I would take a little off of the left to decenter the subject. Way to go!

This is a really nice environmental picture of a marten. They're great little critters--I had a close encounter with one last June, but my shots weren't as nice as this (the lighting was horrible).

I really like the colours here.

The only minor nit I can see is that it seems that the point of focus is a bit in front of his face.
