I am unable to adjust the size of my burn tool circle unless I first click once on the image.  This means I have to go back and undo that move.

Any suggestions as to how to get the tool adjusted in size prior to clicking on the image?

Steve,

Use the left or right bracket keys to size the circle. Shift + Bracket to change the feathering at the edge of the circle. I don't remember the complete list, but these two commands will size all or most of the brush functions in Photoshop.

Sometimes the tools and keyboard short cuts don't respond as expected if the caps lock is on.

Thank you for the response.  Yes, that is my normal mode of operation, using the brackets to resize the circle.  My hang up is when using the burn tool, the bracket resizing is DEAD until I use the tool on the image once.  Only the burn tool is affected this way.

Still looking for a solution.

Thanks, Joel.  Yes, I can't tell you how many times in photoshop I have hit the cap lock unknowingly and wondered why the heck nothing in photoshop is working any more.  I discovered this many years ago, BUT, it still nails me now and then.

That's a pretty common thing with photoshop and it can happen with many tools that use a brush size. The easy workaround is just to click in the image then hit Ctrl-Z to undo what you just did. After that the tool will work and adjust in size normally. It's one of those little annoyances that has been that way since the early days.
