Great episode of The Nature of Things on the CBC (Canada's national broadcaster).  Songbird SOS.

"Songbird SOS is the artfully-shot story of the mass depletion of songbirds in the Americas, an alarming thinning of populations that has seen declines of many species since the 1960s".

Ya, I watched that and indeed it was a great documentary. Another one to watch is "Emptying the Sky's" which deals with the severe decline of songbirds in Europe due to human consumption and the groups that are taking a Greenpeace approach to stopping the problem.

It is a well done documentary isn't it.  I will have to search for the one you mentioned (maybe on Youtube).

The New Yorker's version of "Emptying the Skies" can be found here:

I would add my opinion of the situation in those Mediterranean countries when it comes to "harvesting" songbirds (and those who do it), but I'm afraid it isn't fit for print. I've spent a lot of time in those countries and have experienced firsthand a lot of what the authors describe. It has soured what little optimism I might have otherwise had.

Here's a link to the slaughter of songbirds that I posted further down this forum:
