I found this bad guy at the Corpus Christi Botanical Gardens recently. I have no idea as to his identity. The "perch" is a seed pod on a plant commonly called Mexican Bird of Paradise.

1DII with 180 macro, ISO 400, f18, flash with softbox.

Thanks for looking. All comments and critiques welcome.

Perfect background, lots of good detail in this bug portrait. THe ligth is pretty contrasty, though. I don't know what it is, either. Cool bug.

Nice detail in the image. This guy is definitely mean looking. This light is softer than on some of your earlier ones. Stll pretty definite shadows around the legs and under the antennae. You might try getting the softbox a little closer to the axis of the lens and see if that softens the shadows. Still, this is a very nice image. Thanks for sharing.

Now this is one that I don't think I have ever seen Bruce!
The way that the light is hitting the subject makes it look sort of metallic looking, and the colors, comp, and the details you got are wonderful!!

Nope, no idea either Bruce. The hind legs are fascinating, totally different to anything I've come across. very neat macro with the tones in this, very earthy tones and one excellent comp IMO. Sharp and darn good details Bruce. Impressive macro work mate.

all the best bruce and one VERY interesting macro.

That is one nasty looking bug. Nice comp and details. The light looks contrasty for a softbox but very well done.
