At this size, it's a little hard to tell how hard it was raining. But while Goretex is great, I now know that after a couple of hours even Goretex is not impermeable. ;)

Taken at Hallo Bay this summer.

1D2, 500mm & 2x, 1/640 at f8, ISO 800.

Rich,

This is a very nice shot, the rain is barely visible and I thought it was snow until I read your comments, but it definitly helps set the mood of the shot. I think the image might be improved if you warmed it up a little, but my preference has always leaned to warmer images.

Thanks,

Rich,

The rain effect is most noticeable on the little cubs with their dark coats. THis image also shows the pronounced intoeing with their gait. Nice grouping well executed.

Rich I like the image a lot ... the separation in the family is great and the entire gang is sharp!!!

Love those claws they are very prominent even in the cubs

Would suggest taking a little of the top it could help with the perspective and eliminate part of the lighter area? I was scrawling up to change the crop a little and it seem to help!!!!

Congratulations!!!!!

Great shot of theis bear family. The mood caused by the rain is evident. The claws on the sow really stand out!

Sweet shot Rich. Those little cubs are precious. Thanks for taking me up on the rain motif. It seems it has to be coming down pretty hard to show up as anything at all in an image, which means it must have been raining pretty good for this image.. You captured the magic moment with three clean heads, no foot/leg intersections etc, not always easy with three subjects in one image.. Really like this one Rich.. Thanks

Very nice composition- the claws are great. The rain shows up reasonably well. There's no doubt some form of precipitation is falling.

Forget the Gortex in steady rain! It might work great in some football stadium, but its next to worthless IMO for prolonged rain. But even with heavy rubber or vinyl, you'll still get wet.

Hey Rich,

Nice shot .. always a treat to see some bears!

Gore-tex is a clear winner amongst ALL waterproof-breathable fabrics .. Gore XCR is VERY good. BUT .... anything that's breathable is still susceptible to saturation, and then it loses its' functionality as a waterproof membrane.

Hope you dried out OK.

Cheers

This is a wonderful image Rich, no animals like being in driving rain and the head down, ears back approach of these three shows that off to perfection! Excellent job in getting perfect separation between all three subjects and I love the little one bringing up the rear, as on closer inspection I can see it only has two paws on the ground with two in the air on the same side

Perfect for the Motif and a fine shot too! 8) 8) 8) 8) :)

The difference adult/cub size is so striking in this image. Excellent viewer contact with all three animals, making this a very engaging capture of this scene.

If they were out on the open beach, where were you? In a vehicle?

Cheers,
ben

I was sitting on a piece of driftwood after having been flown in to South Hallo Bay, and alternately (1) hoping that they would come much closer (which they did) and (2) hoping that they didn't come any closer.
